Business Coach Dave McClain Creates Strong Foundations for Big Ideas

Behind every successful business is someone willing to turn a big idea into a workable plan. For KC G.I.F.T. business coach Dave McClain, helping entrepreneurs make that leap is what makes the work meaningful.
Dave has volunteered at the KC G.I.F.T Business Center since 2023, bringing more than 20 years of experience in operations, business strategy, and startup environments to Kansas City's Black-owned businesses. As a result of his guidance, entrepreneurs walk away with strong business plans, sound structures, and streamlined day-to-day operations.
“Given my experience with small businesses and startups, I wanted to help others navigate the daily challenges of this work,” Dave said. “Hearing people's ideas for new products or services keeps me engaged.”

His perspective comes from a career spanning tech startups, telecommunications, procurement and consulting. Today, he serves as a Senior Business Operations Specialist at C2FO, where he works with corporate partners to address invoice processing and supply chain challenges. He also holds a bachelor's degree from Benedictine College and leadership credentials from Dale Carnegie.
One challenge he sees repeatedly at the Business Center is new entrepreneurs trying to tackle too many ideas at one time.
His advice is straightforward: “Pick one and commit to it," he said. "You will learn valuable lessons, even if it is not the perfect initial concept."
Dave also encourages business owners to master the less glamorous details, like required licenses and permits. He also recommends studying competitors to see what takeaways newcomers can learn before the problem arises within their own businesses.
For Dave, KC G.I.F.T. matters because it opens doors. The organization, he said, provides “avenues and resources to founders who might otherwise lack the means to bring a dream to life.”
Through his service, Dave helps transform possibilities into practical next steps one entrepreneur and one decision at a time.
