$10K Grant Helps Elysian Wellness Campus Revitalize Healthcare
Updated: 4 hours ago
While making routine visits to the doctor is often encouraged, the experience that comes with it usually leaves people wondering if it was worth the trip. More often than not, people find themselves waiting for what seems like forever only to be rushed once they finally see a provider.
Dr. Chereena Walker knows firsthand what it's like to feel unheard in a healthcare setting, and she's building something different because of it.
While pregnant with one of her children, Walker was misdiagnosed, her concerns were dismissed, and she nearly lost her life. Even as a physician, she experienced the very challenges many patients face when seeking medical care.
"I never wanted anyone else to feel that their voice didn’t matter, especially when their life could depend on it," Walker said. "I wanted to create a place where people are genuinely cared for, where their stories matter, and where they know someone is in their corner."
That experience inspired her to create Elysian Wellness Campus, a Kansas City healthcare practice focused on primary care, preventive health, chronic disease management, and whole-person wellness. In January 2026, Dr. Walker was awarded a $10,000 grant from KC G.I.F.T. to help grow her business and expand her vision for patient-centered care.

Creating a Different Kind of Healthcare Experience
With its Main Campus on 25th & Brooklyn and a luxury wellness center downtown on 11th & Walnut, Elysian Wellness Campus looks beyond a single appointment or diagnosis to create a more connected approach to health.
The practice offers traditional primary care alongside a Direct Primary Care membership model, giving patients another option for accessing continuous, relationship-based care.
"Whether you're managing a chronic condition, seeking preventive care, or looking for a more personalized approach through our Direct Primary Care model, our goal is to walk alongside you—not rush you through," Walker shared on the Elysian Wellness Campus website.
The practice also offers wellness services such as:
Medical weight management
IV infusion therapy
Nutrition support
Fitness resources
Mental health support
Health education
Elysian Wellness Campus upholds a whole-person wellness philosophy where mental health, lifestyle, and community factors are just as important as physical health. The practice also hosts free community wellness programs, support groups, and health education workshops designed to make wellness resources more accessible.
For Walker, Elysian Wellness Campus is much more than a medical practice.
"This isn’t just a business for us. It’s personal. It’s our purpose, our calling, and our way of loving people through healthcare."
More Than a Grant
Building a business that delivers this level of care takes more than a vision. It requires resources, guidance, and a strong foundation.
Before receiving the KC G.I.F.T. grant, Walker and her team were navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship while continuing to serve their patients. Their financial records needed attention, they had questions about their legal structure, and they were working to establish systems that would support long-term growth.
"Before KC GIFT, we were really just trying to figure it all out," Walker said. "We were building something we believed in with everything we had, but honestly, we were still climbing out of the mud."
The $10,000 grant provided much-needed financial relief, but Walker says the additional business resources made an equally meaningful difference.
"It was the business coaching that gave us direction, the accounting support that helped us get organized, and the legal guidance that gave us confidence in what we were building. For the first time, we felt like we weren’t trying to figure everything out alone."
With those resources and support in place, Elysian Wellness Campus was able to invest back into the business, expand its primary care clinic, and bring in additional wellness providers sooner than originally anticipated.
Walker says the practice has also grown its patient base, expanded its team, and built meaningful relationships with other Kansas City entrepreneurs.

Investing in Care Rooted in Community
KC G.I.F.T. grants are designed to help close the racial wealth gap by investing in Black-owned businesses that create jobs right here in Kansas City.
Elysian Wellness Campus represents the kind of business that can create impact on more than one level. As the practice grows, so does its ability to provide healthcare, wellness education, and community-centered resources to the people it serves.
For Walker, the journey has also been an opportunity for personal growth.
"We’ve had wins, and we’ve had moments that others might call losses, but we choose to see them as lessons," she said. "Every challenge has stretched us, strengthened us, and prepared us for what’s next."
Today, Elysian Wellness Campus continues to expand its approach to care through primary care, wellness services, community programming, and a growing learning institute designed to support students and future healthcare professionals.
As for other Kansas City entrepreneurs working toward their own vision, Walker offers this advice:
"Don’t give up. Believe in yourself, even when things don’t look the way you imagined."
Her experience is a reminder that building a successful business rarely happens without challenges, and having the right support can make a meaningful difference along the way.
"KC GIFT didn’t just invest in our business; they invested in our vision, our confidence, and our ability to serve our community. We will forever be grateful for that."
